John Denver, a singer-songwriter of Colorado who specialized in folk music, touched the hearts of millions. Danoff wrote the tune inspired by Johnny Cash, but Denver was able to hear an early version and knew the song would be one of the Top 10 hits. After performing the song in Washington D.C. to a huge crowd, the singer made a recording a few days afterward.
